Applied Optics Feature Announcement

Laser Applications to Chemical, Security, and Environmental Analysis

Submission Deadline: 15 July 2008

This Lasers, Photonics, and Environmental Optics feature is devoted to selected papers from the Eleventh OSA Topical Meeting and Tabletop Exhibit on Laser Applications to Chemical, Security, and Environmental Analysis (LACSEA X) held 17–20 March 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA. Related manuscripts not presented at the topical meeting are solicited as well. The meeting focused on new developments in optical sources, instrumentation, and spectroscopic techniques that are the principal driving forces for the increased use of lasers in chemical, biophysical, and biochemical analysis as well as environmental measurements. These developments arise in a variety of fields and technology areas, promoting the need for an international, interdisciplinary forum to communicate advances to scientists and engineers in the field. The eleventh topical meeting continued the tradition of state-of-the-art research and applications presented in an informal atmosphere designed to foster communication among researchers and practitioners.

Topics covered at the meeting included:

  • Security issues in view of laser-based methods
  • Atmospheric measurements; environmental issues
  • Laser diagnostics in combustion
  • Laser techniques for biochemical and biophysical applications
  • Chemical monitoring by optical methods
  • Micro-optical systems for chemical analysis
  • New instrumentation and innovative optical methods

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Applied Optics; see the Information for Contributors in any printed issue or the OSA Style Guide (http://ao.osa.org/submit/style/jrnls_style.cfm).

Manuscripts must also be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system, located in the Applied Optics website (http://ao.osa.org/journal/ao/author.cfm). Please submit all papers to the Lasers, Photonics, and Environmental Optics division of Applied Optics and please specify that the manuscript is for the Laser Applications to Chemical, Security, and Environmental Analysis feature (choose from the feature issue drop-down menu).
