Abstract
A novel composite cavity laser containing an He–Ne plasma tube, a heated LiNbO3 crystal, and a cell of iodine vapor has been used to generate 1153-nm (260-THz) radiation in a single mode and to double the frequency of this radiation into the yellow part of the visible spectrum at 576 nm (520 THz). By resonating the yellow light in the cavity, Doppler-free hyperfine structure components of the P(62) line in the strong 17-1 band of 127I2 are readily observed in saturated absorption and used for stabilization.
