Abstract

A simple analysis of light amplification in media with inhomogeneous profile of the complex refractive index is carried out. The results are used to account for the waveguide effects observed in superradiant dye lasers with flashlamp excitation and to discuss the basic operations of some new dye laser configurations recently developed.
